MINI Thunder II Feb 20, 2011

Just wanted to extend an invitation to all the SSMINI members to come down and join us for MINI Thunder II at Thunderhill Raceway Park, Willows CA. This is an HPDE with three run groups (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced). I know of some members of PDX MINI, Emerald MC, and PSMINI that are coming down.
This is being held over the 3-Day Presidents Day weekend. Track day will be Sunday 2/20/2011 so there is a travel day up and back.

Here is the information:

Mini Thunder II Registration is now open. This was a great event last year and proves to be even better this year.

Registration website:
http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.c...DF5B2BC15631B8

Event website: http://www.minithunderhill.com/

Back by popular demand is MINI Thunder II. This event will be held on the 3-day Presidents Day Weekend. The track day will be Sunday Feb 20, 2011, leaving Saturday and Monday as travel days for those coming a long distance. Last year we had entrants from Southern California, Oregon, and Washington. We are currently setting up a registration website, but already have an event website going. Please check http://www.minithunderhill.com/Home.cfm for details and updates.
We will have three groups, Advanced, Intermediate, and Beginners. We expect to have 5+ 20 minute sessions, plus instruction, classroom, demo and parade laps. Entree for single drivers will be $199 for the day and include an event T-Shirt, breakfast, lunch, and sodas/waters during the day. If you made it to last years event, we figure you will return and if you missed it, shame on you, but you can make this one. For those that wish to share a Mini, the cost is $275 but you will have to run in separate groups.
The event will include a Saturday night BBQ dinner and "Casino Night" at Thunderhill Raceway Park. You will get a chance to meet some of the instructors and other drivers, learn the track, and socialize, before getting a good nights sleep. There will be camping available at the track and they do have electrical hookups, bathrooms, showers, and BBQ pits. Most will probably stay in Willows which is a short 7 miles way. They have several hotels to chose from.
You will need a certified helmet that meets the requirements of SA 2000 or SA 2005. The SA is for automotive and SM is for motorcycles. SM helmets are not allowed. You will be able to rent a helmet from the track for $30 for the day.
You will need to fill out the entry form and waiver, plus fill out the Safety Tech Sheet (attached) for your Mini.
Track Day will begin with the track opening at 7:00AM, we will have time for drivers to grab breakfast, rent helmets if necessary, attend a mandatory "all hands" meeting, with first Minis on track at 8:30AM. This is also a good time to empty out your car or ALL loose items, check your fluid levels, tire pressures and torque your wheels.
There will be complete personnel including tow trucks, turn workers, flaggers, grid-control, communications, ambulance and safety equipment.

Was a great event. 660 miles each way. Burned a tank of gas each day at the track. 2011 JCW all stock was great. Even had tires and brakes to get back home left. Great people and a great track. I ran intermediate both cars but the advanced guys were trying to recruit me after a half a day. First time at this track and also had to have a car to get back home. Stayed in my group but by day 2 I was turning fast laps for a stock MINI. Jan put a tune on it which rocked. Boost stays up on the shift now and way more HP. Track is fairly technical and you can get into trouble there. Z06 spun in 4 on cold tires 2 cars ahead of me the first day tearing the front out of the car. I accomplished my two goals. Got faster and learned the track well. 2. Stayed on the track. But I was using all of it by day 2. I was slow coming over the big hill and could pick up lots of time there but it is huge when you are in the car. Would be easy to launch off the track from and a few did. On my last run I got past all the fast cars in front of me and was lapping back markers by the end of the session. I was ready for the advanced MINI group anyway.
There were some fast cars in the advanced group the first day incuding late model stock cars and full race cars, ferrari's etc. Also the passing rules were much more lax. Great time and I will be sure to attend next year. Hope to go down a few more times this year. On the way home my mileage with the tune went up 2 MPG running harder for 29 MPG. 660 miles in 9.5 hours and I never got out of the car. Tehy filled my tank in OR and I got Taco Hell at the drive through. Also spoke with and officer for 15 minutes coming over the pass at 66 in a 55. I was in N coasting clear dry and sunny. I told him I was in N. He ran me through the system and gave me a warning. His partner was running the radar while we chatted and he got another car right away. Even with my stop for gas and food plus the officer visit I averaged 72 MPH. MINI is great for getting my the I-5 lefty lane hangers. Ride was good even on the run flats. Exhaust is getting louder now are 2 seesions at the track plus the tune. I thought it was to quite before but it is just right now.

Island Maser,

Nice write up and pictures. You can download pictures to the PhotoGallery and then post them as other than attachments on your write-ups. Nice job for sure, hope you did not mind that I grabbed one for the front page.

Island Maser,

I'd love to hear more about your impressions of the tune. I've been on the fence, concerned about warranty implications.

You roll the dice with the warranty. I bought the programmer so I can take it out when I want too. The Tune adds about 30HP fromt he seat of the pants.
But it is now a beast. You hear the turbo alot more. The exhaust is much louder as it is now flowing more air. I need to learn to drive it a bit differently with the tune. I lot more power is available at it will spin the fronts very easily if the road is wet. You have to be a more respectful of the throttle now. You need to run in sport mode but I wish it had the regular throttle travel. You have more peddle to work with. I could use it to modulate the power better. Now when you shift you do not loose any boost. You are on the turbo in the next gear and pulling hard. My car needs a boost and temp.
gauge to better keep an eye on the car now. It is hard to go back to stock after running the tune. I did not have a watch at the track but it improved the times. Had to be easy on the throttle as too much throttle resulted in spinning front tires. I found I could carry a gear higher now and rely more on the turbo to get the r's back. More so on the down hill sections which ended up being faster and smoother. You don't have to rev the motor as high. I was surprised there was no more extra speed on the front straight. 115 was about the max with either set up. I chaulked it up gearing. That is the top in fourth and shifting to 5th to down shift a few seconds later just wasted time.
I tought I would find more speed there but it was more pulling through the corners and exit speed. I think Jan is going to be up in Tacoma this summer so we will put it on the Dyno he likes up here.

On the way down to Willows I had a little fun that really impressed me with the JCW. With the Tune it would have been a joke. I ran inot a couple year old GT Mustang in S. OR. It was sunny and dry at the time and he was hanging in left lane with the pack and I blew by a few cars on the right. As I went by I could see he was all dressed in NASCAR Gear, Jacket, Hat, DE Intimidator Sunglasses, etc. I knew he would be coming to find me. I see him trying to get past slower traffic to have at the MINI. It opened up and he came hard on the right. I was going 80 and I let him get his bumper even with my door and down shifted to 4th and stood on her to see what she had.
He got even with my front bumper and the MINI just walked away in 4th. I up shifted to fifth and pulled away. Even I was surprised. He exited at the next exit to know where to get away from the MINI. I know he wouldn't do better if we through in a few tight corners. Loving the MINI but the Maserati has not run in 2 month and she is not happy.
