Muffler Wrap?

I have a question for you all. Would wrapping the exhaust system with a heat/sound deadening material work better than insulating the inside of the cabin's floor to cut the interior sound of a catback system??

It's been a while, but I believe I've seen mention of going this route helping to keep the heat in the exhaust system, and vented where it's supposed to go, rather than bleeding out to the rest of the car. I believe it was in an MC2 a few years ago now? Definitely look more toward a heat material if you go this route. I think the amount of material used to layer the cabin would add a fairly significant amount of weight, compared to wrapping the exhaust.

Thanks Eric! I will go back through my MC2 to see if it is in one of the issues I might have.

My interest in doing this was for sound more than heat. I do not like the droning noise between 2K-2.5K RPM, the rest of the sound is fine.

I even considered an active sound cancelling system :-)

The drone is a harmonic, it is unlikely that wrapping the exhaust will help very much.
You could have a Hemholtz resonator tube welded to your exhaust. You would have to calculate the length of the tube to eliminate the drone.

Here is an article about calculating the length.

Interesting article Dave! If I had access to a good stainless steel welder it might be worth a try. The problem is that the baffle must be put into the system POST MUFFLER. So, maybe hang it on the trailer hitch

Adding weight to the floor of the car with something like Dynamat might be my best route since it would also reduce road noise. The spray-on undercoat that MINI used in our 2011 made a difference in noise over our 2009 MINI.

A thought in process...

Here are some google images of some resonator tubes.

Dave! WOW, that is quite the collection of images. Some appear to be an R53 as well, and it is clear that a lot of time and money has gone into this issue with muffler systems.

I suppose if I could weld properly and do it with stainless I might have a stab at trying to make one, but that is not likely to happen.

Some of those systems that have remade the muffler with the internal baffles are pretty amazing. Has anyone cut open a MINI muffler to see whats inside??

The resonator tube was also mentioned in an MC2 article a few issues back. The feature was on the customizations that a guy on the East Coast (VA, I think?) did, including the resonator to remove the drone. I see Dave beat me to mentioning that one.

I found the MC2 issues, one and 2 back! The parallel resonance pipe.

For all the welding and fiddling with it I am not so sure it is worth it. The Quicksilver system said what little drone it had faded away to zero above 3K rpm, ha, my Milltek is more quiet than that! No drone above 2500rpm.

In the older hotrod systems a "Crossover pipe" was installed to take some of the rap out of the twin pipe exhausts. With MINI it is not an issue but the attempts to mellow the sounds emitted from an engine go back a long way. Over time the science has progressed a lot and made the issue much more complex.

Do the JCW systems have a drone? I have not driven one and maybe I should

A good muffler shop could do it for you.

Yes they do, although Linda hasn't complained... yet. I'm sure she will on the trip to MITO. Maybe you would want to check out Rowan on Saturday.

Lee and I are scrambling to get everything around here done before she goes in for foot surgery on Tuesday to get the metal pins and screws removed. Not enough time for a test ride now but later we will take you up on it! Thank you :-)
